Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: What Holds Up in Georgia Humidity?
Epoxy and polyaspartic coatings are not competitors — they are layers. Here is how each one behaves in Georgia's heat, humidity, and hot-tire traffic.
They are not an either/or
Most quality floors we install use both. Epoxy is the body — a thick, high-build layer that bonds to the concrete and fills imperfections. Polyaspartic is the armor — a fast-curing, UV-stable topcoat that takes the abuse.
A system that is epoxy all the way through can amber in sunlight and is more prone to hot-tire pickup. A system that is polyaspartic all the way through cures fast but does not build the same thickness as economically.
What Georgia weather does to a floor
Our climate stresses coatings in three specific ways:
- Humidity and vapor drive — moisture moving up through a slab will lift a coating that was applied without a moisture check.
- Heat and hot tires — summer pavement heat softens weak coatings, and tires pull them right off the slab.
- Sun exposure — garages with west-facing doors get real UV on the front third of the floor.
What we recommend
For garages, a ground slab, an epoxy base coat, a full flake broadcast, and one or two polyaspartic topcoats. For metallic designs, a pigmented epoxy pour under a high-build UV-stable clear.
For basements and interior spaces where hot tires are not a factor, the topcoat priority shifts to cleanability and gloss retention rather than abrasion.
The part that matters most
Neither chemistry saves a floor that was not prepped. Diamond grinding to open the concrete profile, repairing cracks, and confirming the slab is dry come before any product decision.
